1st ODI: Sherfane Rutherford’s Century Leads West Indies to Triumph Against Bangladesh
1st ODI: Sherfane Rutherford’s debut century gives West Indies a five-wicket win over Bangladesh
Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive maiden century sent the West Indies to a thrilling five-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first ODI at Warner Park on Sunday. Playing in his 10th ODI, the 26-year-old blasted 113 off just 80 balls with seven fours and eight sixes. His innings saw the West Indies get to within seven runs of the highest ever run chase at the venue.
Rutherford came in as West Indies struggled at 94-3 while going after Bangladesh’s demanding 294-6. He had a very crucial 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket with skipper Shai Hope, who played a sane 86 off 88 balls. Rutherford’s pulsating knock ended when he lofted off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz over to Jaker Ali at midwicket.
Then the star batsman joined with Justin Greaves, who remained not out on 41 to produce a 95-run partnership for the sixth wicket that steered West Indies over the edge of victory.
“He’s shown remarkable improvement in his batting,” said captain Hope while praising Rutherford. “We always stress the importance of consistency, and he’s delivering. His ball-striking ability and hard work are shining through. He was disappointed not to finish the game, but he played a brilliant knock.”
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh laid a strong foundation with opener Tanzid Hasan scoring 60 and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributing 74. The pair set the tone before Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 50 and Jaker Ali’s 48 helped post a competitive total. Their 96-run partnership for the sixth wicket offered late resistance, but it wasn’t enough to withstand Rutherford’s fireworks.
The West Indians’ display was a reflection of their depth and resilience, whereas for Rutherford, the game was a bright spot.
