Tahawwur Rana had appealed to the US Supreme Court to stay his extradition. But the court has rejected it. This means that now there is no hindrance to his India lane.

According to CNN News18 sources, India has put up a strong case before the US Department of Justice. Rana’s lawyer gave the excuse of “double jeopardy” – meaning there cannot be two trials for one crime.

But India argued: “Double jeopardy is on the crime, not on the conduct of the accused.”

The US also accepted this legal logic – and approved the extradition.

The effect of India-US friendship

According to sources, India’s strong global presence and friendly ties with the US have been quite helpful. In February, PM Modi and US President Donald Trump had a meeting, even then Rana’s issue was discussed.
Trump had said in that meeting: “Tahawwur Rana will have to face justice in India.”

Special Public Prosecutor Appointed

India’s Home Ministry had appointed advocate Narender Mann as Special Public Prosecutor who will fight the case against Rana in the 26/11 case.
