Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has taken 149 wickets in 89 ODIs, has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the news via a press release on Tuesday night, confirming that Bumrah will miss the prestigious eight-team tournament. The competition is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9, with matches held across three venues in Pakistan and one in Dubai.

In Bumrah’s absence, the BCCI has named fast bowler Harshit Rana as his replacement. The young pacer has limited experience in the 50-over format, having played only two List A matches so far. “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as his replacement,” the BCCI’s statement read.

The 31-year-old Ahmedabad-born cricketer sustained the injury during the fifth Test match against Australia in January 2025. He had to leave the field midway through Day 2 for scans and did not return to bowl in the second innings due to a back spasm.

Speculation over Bumrah’s participation in the Champions Trophy had been ongoing since January 4, 2025, but the BCCI still included him in the provisional squad, which was announced on January 18 in Mumbai.

Bumrah last played an ODI for India on November 19, 2023, against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In that match, he took two wickets, but his efforts were not enough to help the Rohit Sharma-led side secure the ODI World Cup 2023 title against Pat Cummins’ Australia.

His last white-ball match for India was the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa on June 29, 2024, at Kensington Oval, Barbados. Bumrah played a crucial role in India’s victory, picking up two wickets and winning the Player of the Tournament award for his outstanding bowling performance.

As of now, the BCCI has not provided an official update on the severity of Bumrah’s injury. It remains uncertain whether he will recover in time for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), where he plays for the Mumbai Indians. Bumrah, who made his IPL debut in 2013, was retained by the franchise for ₹18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
