A.R. Rahman shared his experience of working on the music of Thug Life – talked about reuniting with Kamal Hasan and Mani Ratnam|

A.R. Rahman opened his heart and told during the launch of the first song of Thug Life “Jinguchaa” in Chennai that working with Kamal Hasan and Mani Ratnam was an emotional and stressful experience for him.
Rahman said with a smile: “Kamal sir looks like he is asking me on screen – ‘What will he do now?’ In every scene it seems like he is watching me.” He said this during the background score of the movie.
He also acknowledged that Mani Ratna and Kamal Haasan had previously done wonders together in an iconic film like Nayakan, which had music by Ilaiyaraaja.
“Nayakan gave a new direction to cinema, and together they made a classic,” Rahman said. But Rahman made it clear that Thug Life is different from Nayakan:
“This movie is not Nayakan, it is a different journey. Its sound is contemporary and modern and fresh. But at some places the magic of both of them shines”.
Rahman said that he has been scoring continuously for the last 4 months, and every day he composes something new and sends it to Mani Ratnam:
“I am still cooking something everyday and sending it to Mani sir, does it seem right?”

At the end of his speech, Rahman wished the cast and crew:
“Trisha, Abhirami, Simbu, Ravi, Rajayant, Sarika maa – best of luck to everyone. Ella pugazhum irivanukke (all the glory to God).”
This speech not only shows the dedication of a musical genius, but also his humility and emotion – when those two legends come together to create a new story.
