A video of Babar Azam assisting Shaheen Shah Afridi with his nearly dislocated thumb during Pakistan’s third ODI against Australia in Perth went viral on social media on Sunday. The incident occurred in the 26th over of Australia’s innings when a deep throw took an awkward bounce, hitting Afridi directly on the thumb as he attempted to stop the ball. Afridi immediately dropped to the ground in pain, prompting Babar to rush over and lend a hand. In the viral video, Babar can be seen gently holding Afridi’s thumb, leading commentators to humorously dub him a ‘doctor.’ Despite initial fears that Afridi might have dislocated his thumb, he returned to his bowling position by the very next ball and later dismissed Sean Abbott a few overs on.

The video quickly caught the attention of fans online. One user commented, “King Babar, now a doctor,” while another added, “Doctor Babar is always there.” Several users appreciated Babar’s caring gesture towards Afridi, with one writing, “Aww, so cute! Dr. Babar Azam.”

Here’s how social media responded to Babar Azam’s gesture:

Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan made history as the first Pakistan captain to secure a bilateral series win in Australia since 2002, when Waqar Younis led the team. After narrowly losing the series opener in Melbourne, Pakistan bounced back in the following matches in Adelaide and Perth, with significant contributions from the pace trio of Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf.

This ODI series victory in Australia also comes amid a challenging time for the Pakistan Cricket Board. Prior to the tour, Babar stepped down from white-ball captaincy for the second time in a year, with Rizwan taking his place. Additionally, white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten resigned, possibly due to disagreements with PCB officials. Test head coach Jason Gillespie was temporarily assigned to lead the white-ball squad for the Australia tour.
