Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, and Shivam Dube Team Up to Set a World Record in Mumbai’s Historic Run Chase.
Mumbai Crush Vidarbha’s Total to Storm Into Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Semifinals with a Record-Breaking Chase
Mumbai crushed Vidarbha’s total of 221/6 on Wednesday to storm into the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semifinals. In the process, the Shreyas Iyer-led team entered T20 cricket’s record books. Mumbai pulled off the highest successful chase in a Men’s T20 knockout game as the team first to successfully chases target of 220 or more. They took Karachi Dolphins record from the previous as they chases 210 against Rawalpindi Rams at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium semi-final in 2010 Faysal Bank T20 Cup.
Ajinkya Rahane was the architect of the chase with a thrilling 84 from 45 balls – 10 fours and 3 sixes – and got Mumbai to 224 for 4 in 19.2 overs to seal their date with Baroda in the semis on Friday.
Reminding one of his huge potential, after much criticism about his poor form, Prithvi Shaw showed all and sundry in a blistering 49 off 26 balls which was studded with 5 fours and 4 sixes. His explosive start propelled Mumbai to 83 runs within seven overs.
However, Shaw’s dismissal to left-arm pacer Dipesh Parwani sent a mini-shockwave for Mumbai. Skipper Shreyas Iyer (5) and India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav (9) were dismissed in quick succession, leaving Mumbai at 118/3 in 11.1 overs and needing 104 runs from the last eight overs.
Rahane kept the innings afloat with a series of classy strokes but was dismissed at 157 in the 15th over.
The Thrill Shivam Dube (37* off 22, 1 four, 2 sixes) and Suyansh Shedge (36 off 12, 1 four, 4 sixes) took on the chase. The duo brought an electrifying 67 runs in just over four overs. Shedge’s explosive batting included a 22-run over off Mandar Mahale in the 17th, featuring three consecutive sixes followed by a boundary. Vidarbha’s Innings
Vidarbha set a challenging target thanks to standout performances by Atharva Taide (66 off 41 balls, 10 fours, 1 six), Apoorva Wankhade (51 off 33 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes), and Shubham Dubey (43 off 19 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes).
Despite Vidarbha’s strong batting effort, Mumbai’s powerful chase overshadowed their innings, marking a historic moment in the tournament and reinforcing Mumbai’s reputation as a dominant force in domestic cricket.
