Algerian Olympic gold medalist boxer Imane Khelif has been at the center of a gender controversy that surfaced in Paris this year. A leaked document obtained by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia has confirmed that Khelif possesses internal testicles and XY chromosomes, suggesting a condition known as 5-alpha reductase deficiency.
During the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, several experts raised questions about Khelif’s gender, asserting that she was male after competing in the women’s boxing category at the international multi-sport event.

Medical Report on Imane Khelif
A report by Reduxx indicates that Khelif’s medical findings, shared by Ait Aoudia, confirm the presence of testicles due to 5-alpha reductase deficiency. This report, created in June 2023, was a collaboration between the Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris and the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers.
Understanding 5-alpha Reductase Deficiency
The report highlights that Khelif’s condition, 5-alpha reductase deficiency, impacts sexual development both before birth and during puberty. This disorder typically occurs in genetically male individuals with one X and one Y chromosome.
According to the National Institute of Health, this deficiency is a significant cause of ambiguous genitalia in children.
The clinical report also noted that an MRI scan showed Khelif lacked a uterus and instead had internal testicles and a “micropenis.” Following the MRI, a chromosomal test confirmed Khelif’s XY karyotype. Additionally, doctors suggested that Khelif’s parents might be blood relatives, as reported by Aoudia.
Khelif’s medical report also advised that she undergo “surgical correction and hormone therapy” to align her self-identified gender with her biological identity.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) prohibited Khelif from competing in the World Championship Gold Medal match in New Delhi.
