“Apology Expected…”: Parliamentary Panel To Call On Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta

New Delhi: A Parliamentary Standing Committee will serve summons to Meta, the social media giant, after some comments of its CEO Mark Zuckerberg regarding the 2024 Indian general election. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who heads the House panel on Communication and Information Technology, says Meta will have to be confronted over its contribution to the ‘misinformation economy’.

“Misinformation regarding a democratic country discredits that country. Organization will have to apologize both the Parliament and to the citizens in regard to it,” said Dubey on an X post.

Talking during an interview of the podcast 10 January Facebook co-founder Zuckerberg said, he was just three years older in his 40th year that the Covid pandemic drained trust from all governments across the world. While stumbling on India’s condition, he said, “2024 was a very big election year worldwide, and in countries like India, incumbents essentially lost every single election. There seems to be a global phenomenon, whether due to inflation, economic policies to deal with Covid, or how governments handled the pandemic.”

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw immediately retaliated by labeling it as factually incorrect. “Indian people have given their full support to the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha elections held last year,” he said.

This makes India the biggest democracy in the world, in which elections had a voter’s population of 640 million voters or more as recently as during the 2024 elections, as Indians trust in NDA again under @narendramodi. Those claims by Mr Zuckerberg that most incumbents have lost their election including India in post COVID have not been even found factually right. Vaishnaw added as he supervises the three key portfolios-the Railways portfolio and Information and Broadcasting and that of Electronics and IT on his account of X:.

He added, “From free food for 800 million people, 2.2 billion free vaccines, to aid provided to other nations during the pandemic, PM Modi’s decisive third-term victory highlights good governance and public trust. It is disappointing to see misinformation from Mr. Zuckerberg himself. Let’s prioritize facts and credibility.”

The ruling BJP with Modi at the helm had braved the storm, but within the 2024 general election face a series of losses; however, key allies gave him enough to hold onto over the majority. In this election, Congress, along with the other parties involved, did enjoy a few victories, but were not able to take the majority of seats to take power. Win the Modi 3.0 victory, Indian Prime Minister, Modi, for example, became the second to ever serve a three consecutive terms as Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru.
