Babar Azam is currently facing one of the toughest periods of his cricketing career, struggling both as a batter and as captain. During Pakistan’s recent Test series against Bangladesh, the prolific right-hander was unable to reach a half-century in any of his four innings, leading to a surprising 2-0 series defeat. Earlier in June, Pakistan, led by Babar, was knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stages after unexpected losses to the USA and a disappointing defeat to India.

This prolonged poor performance has led to significant criticism from fans and former players, with many questioning Babar’s role as captain. Younis Khan, a former Pakistan captain and the man who led the team to their T20 World Cup victory in 2009 has now offered his perspective on Babar’s current struggles.

Younis Khan stated that Babar Azam was appointed captain in 2019 because he was the top batter in the team, and now he needs to concentrate on improving his game. Younis suggested that Babar should eliminate distractions and external pressures to regain his form.

“My advice to Babar is to focus solely on his cricket and elevate his performance. He was given the captaincy because he was the best player at that time. I was present when the decision was made to appoint the team’s leading player as captain,” Younis remarked at a recent event in Pakistan.

Younis Khan emphasized that if Babar Azam and other top players perform well on the field, the results will become evident. He noted that there is a tendency among players to talk more than they deliver.

He also recommended that Babar should learn from Virat Kohli, who refocused on his performance by stepping down from captaincy. Younis highlighted Kohli’s success after making this move as an example of how prioritizing personal performance over leadership can lead to significant achievements.

“Kohli achieved much at a young age, but he understood what he needed to focus on for the future. Captaincy is secondary; performance is key. Look at Kohli—he chose to step down from captaincy on his own terms and is now breaking records globally. This demonstrates that representing your country should be the priority. If there’s any energy left, then play for yourself,” Younis added.

Currently, Babar is participating in the Champions Cup, a domestic one-day tournament in Pakistan, which is also a preparation for next year’s Champions Trophy.
