The 29-year-old stepped in for Babar Azam in the starting XI after the former Pakistan captain was dropped due to a poor performance. This innings marked the end of Ghulam’s long wait for a spot on the Pakistan team after he set a national record with 1,249 runs during the 2020 domestic season.

Ghulam formed a crucial 149-run partnership for the third wicket with Saim Ayub, who scored a career-best 77, and added another 65 runs for the fifth wicket with Rizwan.

Reflecting on his achievement, Ghulam expressed that his century was a reward for his patience.
“It’s a joy to score a hundred, especially as a replacement for Babar Azam, who has been a fantastic player for Pakistan,” said Ghulam, who had a significant let-off on 79 when Ben Duckett missed a tough chance off Leach.
“I watched that chance with bated breath, but the Almighty was very kind to me,” he added.
