Biden’s Shift on His Son’s Case Raises Concerns About US Justice Department and Possible Action Against Adani Group
President Joe Biden’s latest moves have triggered another round of attacks from Donald Trump, who now accused the US Department of Justice, or DOJ, of political interference. In a stunning turn-about, Biden granted a Presidential pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who would have spent his life in prison for conviction on multiple counts.
This has raised a lot of controversy about the impartiality of the DOJ and how it had handled other high-profile cases such as the Adani Group case that is still under investigation. Many geopolitical experts have earlier pointed to possible conflicts of interest involving the Biden administration’s foreign policy.
Hunter Biden:
Hunter Biden is the son of President Joe Biden. He has been convicted of gun-related crimes and tax evasion. He has been charged with long prison terms, including 17 years on gun charges and up to 25 years for tax evasion, totaling more than $1.4 million. On top of that, Hunter is accused of using his father’s political influence to get exclusive rights to drill oil in Ukraine and doing unsavory business deals with China. However, due to this presidential pardon from Joe Biden, he will go Scot free for all the wrongs done in between the period of 2014-2024.
Hunter Biden is supposed to be punished on 12 December 2024. However, his dad going for his pardon is as contrasting as his words some time earlier stating that he won’t try interfering in law issues.
Public Response to Pardon
Former President Donald Trump commented by labeling these acts as “a miscarriage of justice,” declaring that Biden has been using the powers of this presidency to help his family. The pardon in which Hunter Biden gets acquitted of prosecution in any potential future litigations against him considering his deeds in the past ten years took place at a time when his father was holding the positions of Vice President and then the President of the United States.
DOJ allegations: weaponizing the justice system?
Criticism against the US Department of Justice has accused it of being a political tool. It is said to have been used wrongly for targeting political opponents and serving personal and foreign policy interests of those in power. Geopolitical analysts and former diplomats commented on how Hunter Biden leveraged his father’s office to expand his business ventures in Ukraine and China and whether US foreign policy was tailored to accommodate these relationships.
The recent indictment by the DOJ against top leaders like Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and Vneet Jaain of the Adani Group has only heightened the perception that the moves by the DOJ are politically driven. Though it has made a few allegations against it, no charge can be proven against the company, and the group has labeled the allegations baseless. The DOJ responds, “The defendants are innocent until they are proven guilty.”.
Kash Patel Criticism of FBI Director
Kashyap “Kash” Patel is an attorney who has proven to be a harsh critic of the deep state in the United States. He has been one of the sharp critics of the DOJ, as he branded the department partisan with political agendas. Patel is to soon be appointed as the next FBI Director under the potential Trump administration. He demands that the whole system of US law enforcement and intelligence agencies should transform altogether. People in the Department of Justice work solely to get their next promotion, argued Patel while referring to the cleansing process needed for these agencies, freeing them from political influence.
Many believe the new Trump administration will correct these wrongs and turn around what they believe to be a slanted foreign policy and partisan conduct in the Biden administration. Trump has already introduced plans to transform US foreign policy and streamline agencies such as NATO. His Department of Government Oversight, established by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, is meant to clean up bureaucracy, while Patel intends to eliminate political bias from investigative agencies.
