Injuries force changes for Ireland Women ahead of ODI series against Sri Lanka

Ireland’s Women’s cricket team has relocated to Belfast in preparation for their three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, two key players from the original squad have been ruled out of the series due to injuries sustained during the preceding T20I series.

The team was buoyed by their historic first-ever victory against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, but this achievement was dampened by the news that their captain, Laura Delany, would miss the crucial ICC Women’s Championship matches. Delany suffered a suspected ligament injury after rolling her ankle during the fielding on Tuesday. Following scans, it was confirmed that she will be sidelined for the three ODIs.

Jane Maguire has been called up as her replacement, while Gaby Lewis will take over the captaincy duties, with Orla Prendergast stepping in as interim vice-captain.

The second withdrawal is Una Raymond-Hoey, who sustained a low-grade muscle tear in the first T20I match. As a result, she will miss the ODI series as well, with Sarah Forbes remaining in the squad as cover.

Ireland Women’s Head Coach, Ed Joyce, commented on the situation, stating:

“Losing any player to injury is tough, but losing our captain, who is also our most experienced player, forces us to rethink our strategy. However, Gaby has led the team before in Laura’s absence, and I have full confidence in her leadership for the upcoming ODIs. Jane Maguire has been impressive with the ball during the T20Is and has earned her place in the ODI squad, highlighting the growing depth and competition within our team.”
