“Crack the Whip”: Rahul Gandhi’s Plea to M Kharge Following Maharashtra Defeat.
New Delhi: Consecutive electoral defeats in Maharashtra and Haryana have led to demands for introspection and decisive action within the Congress party. Leaders have pledged a course correction under the leadership of Mallikarjun Kharge, with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, asking the party chief to “take strong action”.
Cautioning against internal discord and anti-party statements, Congress Working Committee member Mallikarjun Kharge said here on Friday that “tough decisions” would be necessary to hold people accountable and identify the party’s shortcomings following the election losses.
In Maharashtra, Congress could manage to win only 16 out of 288 assembly seats, one of the worst electoral defeats it ever had. Its allies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) – the NCP, the Sharad Pawar faction, and Shiv Sena, the Uddhav Thackeray faction—also fared poorly with only 10 and 20 seats respectively.
The CWC resolution termed the Haryana results as “surprising,” stating that electoral malpractice had played a role in the outcome. A team of party members will visit both states to conduct post-election analysis.

“How can we defeat our opponents if we continue to fight among ourselves and make statements against each other?” Kharge asked during the meeting.
Rahul Gandhi said similar things, urging the party chief to “take strong action,” adding that Congress should still be an “organization of resistance” and telling people to have faith in the party.
Kharge also announced the intention to do state-wise organisational reviews to rectify weaknesses and losses in the Maharashtra and Haryana polls. Internal committees will be formed which will visit both states and sit with local leaders.
The CWC resolution expressed concern over the Election Commission’s functioning and questioned its role in weakening the very fabric of election integrity, which is at the core of democracy.
“There is nothing to be depressed or fearful of. We have to move on with new vigor. Consolidation and discipline are more crucial now than ever,” stated the CWC resolution. “The party must persist in its narrative, including calling for a caste census, abolishing the 50 per cent cap on reservations for SC/STs and OBCs, checking monopolies, and checking surging prices and rising unemployment,”
Congress also announced plans to launch a nationwide movement along with INDIA bloc parties to express the concern over the electoral process. Party communications head Jairam Ramesh said that rallies would soon be held to mobilize public support.
