CSK CEO’s Honest Acknowledgment of MS Dhoni’s Secretive Approach: ‘Reveals Plans Only at the Last Moment’
Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the franchise has no intention of parting ways with their former captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, anytime soon. Dhoni, who stepped down as CSK’s captain last season, was retained by the team for IPL 2025 as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore. The iconic wicketkeeper-batsman, who last played for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup, qualifies for the special uncapped rule for next year’s retention.
In a discussion with former CSK player Ambati Rayudu, Viswanathan spoke about the possibility of Dhoni’s final match in Chennai, stating that as long as the legendary captain wishes to continue playing, CSK will always welcome him.
Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings, spoke candidly about MS Dhoni’s tendency to keep his plans private until the very last moment. He acknowledged Dhoni’s immense passion for CSK and his large fanbase, adding that Dhoni had previously mentioned he would play his final match in Chennai. Viswanathan expressed hope that Dhoni would continue playing for CSK, noting that the doors will always be open as long as Dhoni wants to play. He also praised Dhoni’s commitment and decision-making, confident that Dhoni would always make the right choice for the team.
Viswanathan further discussed CSK’s retention strategy for the upcoming season, mentioning that the team managed to retain their core players without much hassle. He revealed that the retention decisions were made after discussions with CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni, and coach Stephen Fleming. The focus was on retaining players who had stabilized the team in previous seasons, including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, and Shivam Dube. Viswanathan also highlighted Matheesha Pathirana’s potential as an invaluable asset to the team and confirmed his retention.
In addition to the retention news, Viswanathan shared that a total of 1,574 players had registered for the IPL mega auction, with former pacer James Anderson setting his base price at ₹1.25 crore. The auction will take place in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.
