Fighting Life’s Battle Chhath Songs , Sharda Songs Echoing at the Ghats Carry a Hint of Sadness |
The Chhath festival has begun today in several parts of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. The Chhath ghats are being prepared. Trains heading to Bihar are packed with crowds, but amidst all this, one thing that is troubling people is the health of Sharda Sinha. Sharda Sinha is battling for her life at AIIMS, Delhi. It’s hard to imagine the Chhath festival without the songs of Sharda Sinha, as her music is played at every Chhath ghat. Until a few years ago, Sharda Sinha would also hold live shows in Bihar days before the festival. She has popularized Chhath songs in many languages, including Maithili, Magahi, and Bhojpuri, across villages.
Along with the Chhath festival, her songs have always been present during Holi and wedding ceremonies. Her music carries a simplicity that can transport listeners from a room straight to the Chhath ghats of Bihar. Unlike other folk singers, Sharda Sinha has crossed the boundaries of language and has become popular throughout Bihar and large parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Sharda Sinha’s Popularity in Bollywood
