Former MP Ashok Tanwar Reenters Congress After Campaigning for BJP Just Hours Earlier
Chandigarh: Former Lok Sabha MP Ashok Tanwar, who joined the BJP in January and ran unsuccessfully for the general election under the ‘lotus’ symbol, has returned to the Congress party. He rejoined Congress today during a rally in Mahendragarh, Haryana, led by party leader Rahul Gandhi.
Tanwar, a former Congress MP from Sirsa, was the Haryana Congress chief from 2014 to 2019 before leaving the party. In 2021, he switched to the Trinamool Congress and then moved to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) the following year. He departed from AAP prior to the Lok Sabha elections, opposing party leader Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to form an alliance with Congress.
After leaving AAP, Tanwar joined the BJP and contested the general election from Sirsa but lost to Congress’s Kumari Selja.

In a statement on X, Congress highlighted Tanwar’s commitment to advocating for the marginalized and noted that his decision to rejoin the party was influenced by their dedication and struggle.
Tanwar holds an MPhil and PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University and began his political career with Congress’s student wing, the National Students Union of India. He served as the organization’s president and also led the Indian Youth Congress before assuming higher positions in the party.
Interestingly, earlier this morning, Tanwar was tweeting in support of BJP candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections. Just an hour later, he was seen at the Congress rally with Gandhi, where the announcer referred to his “ghar wapasi” (homecoming). Those tweets have since been removed.
Tanwar’s return to Congress coincided with the last day of campaigning ahead of the Haryana Assembly election. The 90 assembly constituencies in the state will cast their votes on Saturday, with results to be announced on Tuesday. While Congress is striving to regain power, the BJP is looking for a third consecutive term.
