A 22-year-old Hyderabad captain, young Indian batter Tilak Varma entered into history books by becoming the first player in recording three successive T20 centuries. The feat was achieved by the youngster as Hyderabad played their opening match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Meghalaya at Saurashtra Cricket Stadium C. 151 runs were secured by Tilak after facing 67 balls. Shreyas Iyer hit 14 fours and 10 sixes in making 151 from 67 deliveries as India men overcame a huge 248/4 in 20 overs built by Hyderabad to overhaul a game which saw his score of 147 surpassed. Tilak made his half-century in 28 balls and completed the century in 51 deliveries. It was his third century in 10 days, following successive hundreds in India’s recent T20I tour of South Africa, where he became only the second Indian batter, after Sanju Samson, to score consecutive T20I centuries.

In this game, Meghalaya were bowled out for a paltry 69. Tilak’s form hasn’t gone haywire; he has run up 2950 odd runs for the teams he led during all his 90 T20 innings, in fact four centuries. Both anchoring and accelerating of the innings required in one’s cricketing speaks volumes for his importance both at home and abroad.
