Knockout Playoffs Match Report: Bengaluru FC 5-0 Mumbai City
Bengaluru FC defeated Mumbai City 5-0 in a one-sided match and took entry in the semifinals. This victory was not just a simple victory, but a Dhandaar performance in which Bengaluru left Mumbai behind in every department.
Mumbai City’s defensive mistakes and Bengaluru’s control
Mumbai City played against Bengaluru with the same attacking formation with the confidence of the previous match’s win. But this time Bengaluru did not keep their midfield maestro Alberto Noguera sitting and its effect was visible throughout the match.
The first goal came in the 9th minute, when Roshan Singh, Rahul Bheke, Noguera and Vinith Venkatesh’s perfect passing reached the bass to Ravin Williams. Suresh Singh converted the pass into a claimant goal. This beginning itself was enough to tell what mindset Bengaluru has come with.
Mendez’s penalty and Williams’ fast attack
Mumbai City’s problems increased further when Valpuia tackled Williams in the 39th minute and the referee awarded a penalty. Mendez confidently converted it in the 42nd minute. Mumbai City’s midfield looked weak till the first half and Bengaluru had complete control.
Williams who was creating threat in the first half also, finally managed to score a goal in the 62nd minute on Suresh’s pass. His low powerful shot became impossible for the goalkeeper to save. The score became 3-0 and there was no scope for Mumbai City’s comeback.
Chhetri’s entry and Bengaluru’s goal rain
In the 76th minute, the biggest cheer from Bengaluru came when Sunil Chhetri came on the field. And just a minute later, Chhetri made full use of his experience and scored a classy goal on Jorge Pereyra Diaz’s assist. This confirmed Bengaluru’s victory.
In the 83rd minute, ex-Mumbai player Diaz scored against his old club and finalized the scorecard of 5-0. This goal was possible due to another ex-Mumbai player Noguera’s wonderful assist. Diaz’s celebration after the goal was worth watching!
Disapointing End for Mumbai City
This season has been quite disappointing for last year’s champions Mumbai City. The first round of the playoffs itself was a big blow for them. Their attacking strength was there but the midfield and defense failed.
Bengaluru FC now ready to face FC Goa in the Semifinal
Bengaluru FC will now play the first leg of the semifinals at home on April 2 and will play the second leg against FC Goa in Margao on April 6. Will Bengaluru FC be able to establish its domination like this? It will be interesting to watch!
