Magic of PowerPlay: PBKS vs LSG match at a glance!|

PowerPlay is not just an opening phase in cricket, but it sets the flow of the match. And something similar was seen in the IPL 2025 match of PBKS vs LSG! Punjab Kings (PBKS) scored 61/1 in PowerPlay, while Lucknow Super Gianta (LSG) could reach only 39/3.
Now look at an interesting stat! From 2023 till today, whichever team loses 3 or more wickets in PowerPlay, their chances of losing the match are more than 72%. Meaning LSG’s defeat was already written!
Captain Like Game, Captain Like Match
Shreyas Iyer vs Rishabh Pant – Both captains came on the same occasion, but the difference was in their approach.
Shreyas Iyer came in the third over and played a calm and composed innings. 52 runs in 30 balls, with 4 sixes. First he rotated the strike with Prabhsimran Singh, then supported Nehal Wadhera. Meaning he steadied his team and took it to victory.
Rishabh Pant also came in the Powerplay, but his time was quite amazing. First Arshdeep clean bowled Mitchell Marsh with a brilliant delivery, then Aiden Markram also got out after being chopped on a fast ball. Pant also got out on a ball from Glenn Maxwell which he would have normally hit for a six! Look at his IPL 2025 scores – 0,15,2 – meaning the form is still missing.
Pant accepted after the match, “We scored 20-25 runs less, but this is part of the game. This was our first home game, we are still understanding the pitch conditions.”
Smooth chase of Punjab Kings!
The run chase was absolutely effortless for PBKS. The pitch was a bit sticky, but everyone remembers one shot from Prabhsimran Singh – hitting an over-cover six on a slower, wide ball! Look at another big contrast: LSG bowled 3 overs of spin in the PowerPlay, but PBKS bowled only one over from Maxwell – and got a big wicket in that one over! Ravi Bishoni (LSG’s main spinner) looked clueless throughout the match, while PBKS’s 21-year-old spinner Digvesh Rathi was bowling better than him. Bishoni was beaten by Prabhsimran with a slog-sweep, pull and cover-drive! LSG’s batting had already collapsed, and Badoni-Smad’s recovery also did not work. The average first innings score on Lucknow’s ground is just 165, and pacers here take a wicket every 17.9 balls. That’s why, when wickets fall in PowerPlay itself, comeback becomes difficult.
Conclusion: PowerPlay decides the match!
Take a look at the PowerPlay scorecard and you will know who is winning the game and who is losing!
Shreyas Iyer was playing calmly and shaping the game, while Rishabh Pant was just trying to catch-up the match. And this became the real reason for victory and defeat.
