MS Dhoni Speaks Out on IPL Future Before Retention Deadline, Acknowledges Challenges
MS Dhoni Hints at Continued IPL Career Beyond 2025 Amid Retention Deadline
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the legendary captain of India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has hinted strongly at his intention to keep playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) through 2025 and possibly beyond. At 43, Dhoni appears to have addressed speculation about his future by discussing his commitment to staying in top physical shape to play cricket for the “next few years.” His comments suggest that he is not only part of CSK’s plans for IPL 2025 but potentially for the entire three-year cycle following the mega auction.
“I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play,” Dhoni stated during a promotional event for the software brand Rigi, where he serves as a brand ambassador, as reported by Times of India.

“When you play cricket at a professional level, it can be hard to enjoy it just as a game. That’s my goal. It’s not easy; there are emotions involved and commitments to consider. I want to relish the game for the next few years,” Dhoni added.
His next remarks further emphasized his focus on the IPL.
“I have to keep myself fit for nine months to be able to play for two and a half months in the IPL. It requires planning, but I also want to relax a bit,” Dhoni explained.
Dhoni passed the captaincy of CSK to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024. However, given his stature as a five-time IPL-winning captain and one of the tournament’s biggest icons, his continued participation would be welcomed by the league.
With his last match for the Indian team being over five years ago, Dhoni can be retained by CSK as an uncapped player for a price of just ₹4 crore, thanks to the reinstatement of a rule that had been eliminated in 2021.
