Munawar Faruqui Shares His Son's Kawasaki Diagnosis: Key Details About This Rare Disease

Recently, Comedian Munawar Faruqui opened up to one of the toughest moments of his life. His one-and-a-half-year-old son, Mikael, had been diagnosed with a rare condition. Munawar Faruqui had opened up about the emotional and financial struggles he had during his fight with his son Kawasaki Disease in an interview with Janice Sequeira on her podcast.

Munawar recalled the ordeal, saying he could hardly afford his son’s medical treatment at that time. “My son was just one and a half years old when he fell sick. For 2-3 days, his condition showed no improvement. After taking him to the hospital, we found out he had Kawasaki Disease. The treatment required three injections, each costing ₹25,000, but I only had ₹700-800 with me.”. It was such a scary situation,” he said.

What Is Kawasaki Disease?

Kawasaki Disease is a rare but serious condition that mostly occurs in children under five years old. It results in an inflammation of the blood vessels, including those carrying blood to the heart. Hence, it requires urgent medical treatment.

Symptoms of Kawasaki Disease

The disease is usually characterized by clear progression through the following symptoms: persistent fever over five days; rashes on the chest, belly, or genitalia; redness in the eyes without discharge; swollen lymph nodes in the neck; joint aching or swelling, most commonly in the knees or hips.

Inability of children to think and acts irrationally within the acute phase.

Causes of Kawasaki Disease
The cause of Kawasaki disease is not yet well explained. Researchers however suspect it results from an inappropriate response to an infection that has the capacity to trigger this. This, however, seems not to be solely linked by the genetic predisposition as believed.

Diagnosis of Kawasaki Disease
Doctors diagnose Kawasaki Disease by means of history, physical examinations, and specific tests. Blood tests are used in order to identify signs of inflammation while heart ultrasounds assess the impact on cardiac functions. Treatment for Kawasaki Disease Kawasaki Disease is not curable, but its symptoms and complications can be managed with timely diagnosis and treatment. Treatment options are usually:
-Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG):Administration of antibodies to bolster the immune system. Aspirin-Antipyretic medication to minimize fever and inflammation. Monitoring for any other complications may occur, hence, there will be serially conducted Echocardiograms -an imaging done regularly to track heart conditions.

The Munawar Faruqui incident exposed the emotional as well as the financial burden it may impose on families for medical emergencies, and a high diagnosis rate and medical care during early stages prove very useful for rare cases such as Kawasaki Disease.
