Paris Olympics: Kiran Pahal Fails To Make 400m Semi-finals; Finishes Sixth In Repechage Heat 1
Indian quarter-miler Kiran Pahal finished sixth in heat 1 of the women’s 400m repechage round at the Paris 2024 Olympics and failed her place in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
Indian quarter-miler Kiran Pahal finished sixth in her heat of the women’s 400m repechage round at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Tuesday and did not make it to the semifinals. She ran the repechage round in 52.59 seconds, which was slower than her time of 52.51 seconds in the first round. Only the top athletes from each heat, plus the two fastest overall in the repechage round, move on to the semifinals. At Paris 2024, the repechage round has been added for all individual track events from 200m to 1500m, including hurdles. This new format now includes six distances for both men and women, with four rounds instead of the usual three.
In the new repechage format, athletes who don’t qualify directly from the first round have a second chance to make it to the semifinals by competing in repechage heats. This replaces the old system where athletes advanced based on their fastest times, including ‘lucky losers’ who weren’t among the top placings.
Kiran Pahal secured her spot for the Paris Olympics in the women’s 400m at the Inter-State Athletics in June. She ran a remarkable time of 50.92 seconds, which was faster than the Olympic qualification time of 50.95 seconds.
She is now the second-fastest Indian female 400m runner ever, behind Hima Das, who holds the national record of 50.79 seconds set in 2018. Kiran is the first Indian woman in the 400m to qualify for the Olympics in eight years, since Nirmal Sheoran did so for the 2016 Games.
