Perth Test: Jasprit Bumrah and India Seek New Beginning
Perth Test: Bumrah and India Ready for a Fresh Start
As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins in Perth this Friday, India’s captain, Jasprit Bumrah, is focusing on a clean slate for his team. After a tough series loss to New Zealand—India’s first home defeat in 12 years—questions arose about the team’s commitment and focus. However, Bumrah emphasized that the team must move forward, regardless of past results. “Whether we win or lose, we start from zero,” Bumrah said in the pre-match press conference. “The World Cup win does not make us complacent, and our loss to New Zealand does not bring baggage. We’re approaching this with a fresh mindset against a new opposition in different conditions.”
It is a visit to Perth for India, touted to have fast wickets-a far cry from the spin-friendly pitches they are used to back home. Bumrah is confident of his team’s preparation: “We came here early and spent time at WACA. Many players are experiencing it for the first time, but we’ve faced similar challenges before and emerged victorious.”

The pitch in Perth is likely to provide good pace and bounce, though the curator Isaac McDonald doesn’t expect the cracking of the pitch seen in the years gone by, partly because of milder weather. He does expect some deterioration, however. And he believes that the grass would provide variable bounce. This would normally trouble the Indian batsmen, but Bumrah’s side is geared up for the challenge ahead.
The match will see an interesting contrast of experience, as India on its part boasts of being relatively young while Australia has ample experience in the form of players like Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc. The Indian players in this case are Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel – both of whom still are at the nascent stages of their careers and face more pressure from their performances.
Bumrah feels that being mentally switched on and not letting the pressure of experience interfere with their performance is the approach. On the other hand, while the Australian team is refreshed and has had more time to prepare, Bumrah feels unbothered about his team’s ability to perform when it matters.
As Bumrah rightly said, the team starts at “zero” and would look to make a strong statement from word go, letting all past disappointments behind. Now, the real battle begins.
