New Delhi: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into Lok Sabha was not only a political moment but also a scene full of symbolic value. Wearing a Kerala Kasavu saree, her attire immediately brought the memories of her late grandmother, Indira Gandhi, who was most often seen in similar traditional sarees during her time in Parliament.

Priyanka’s decision for this traditional garment carried the deeper meaning as she took the oath as the Member of Parliament for Wayanad on Thursday, holding up a copy of the Constitution. She looked quite like the former three-time Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Everybody remembered the iconic image created by the former prime minister. Indira Gandhi never failed to use her apparels as a tool with which to connect to her people, and Priyanka’s saree reminded one of that.

When asked by a reporter whether she had thought of her grandmother during the oath-taking ceremony, Priyanka Gandhi replied, “Yes, I did remember her and also my father.”
Well, Kasavu is more than just a dress in Kerala. It stands symbolically for the unity that Kerala has culturally. For wearing it, Priyanka Gandhi paid respectful obeisance to the good people of Wayanad who elected her as their representative.

Priyanka was accompanied by her mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, and her children Raihan and Miraya Vadra, who are the children of Priyanka and Robert Vadra at the ceremony.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat with a good margin of 4,10,931 votes, outsmarting CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri. The battle in the Wayanad was triangular: Priyanka, the BJP candidate Navya Haridas, and CPI candidate Sathyan Mokeri.

Her brother Rahul Gandhi had earlier represented the seat, vacating it as he won Lok Sabha elections from both Wayanad and Raebareli and has since decided to represent Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.

The by-election for the seat also won by Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan was on its way to getting vacant, and he took oath as a Member of Parliament. He won the by-election for Nanded Lok Sabha seat with 5,86,788 votes after the death of sitting Congress MP Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.

The by-elections were held across 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats in 15 states, with notable contests in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad, Kerala, where Priyanka Gandhi made her electoral debut.
