Punjab Kings batsman Shashank Singh praised his captain Shreyas Iyer, who put the team’s hit above his personal milestone. In the last over of Kings’ innings, Shreyas was on 97*, while Shashank was on strike. Shashank scored 23 runs in the final over, but did not let Shreyas on strike, due to which he could not complete his first IPL century.

“It is a big thing to put the team first”

Shashank said, “It takes a lot of courage to say this, because in T20 cricket, especially in IPL, centuries are not easily scored.” He said this after winning by 11 runs against Gujarat Titans. Shashank thought of taking a single to help Shreyas complete his century, but Shreyas asked him to keep hitting shots.

“Shreyas said – ‘Don’t worry about my 100’”

Shashank said, “He told me, ‘Shashank, don’t worry about my 100, just hit every ball for a boundary or a six.’ This gave me more confidence. In the end, it is a team game, but it is difficult to get up on your own in such situations. But Shreyas did it.”

“I have known Shreyas for 10-15 years”

Shashank said, “I have known Shreyas for 10-15 years, who is always like this. He advised me to stay calm and play cricket shots. By God’s grace, we finished well.”

Shreyas Iyer was chosen as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his unbeaten 97 (9 sixes, 5 fours) innings of 42 balls.

Final Score:

Punjab Kings: 243/5 (20 overs)
Gujarat Titans: 232/10 (20 overs)
