Shubman Gill Doubtful for 2nd Test Against Australia? Report Raises Concerns About India Star

India batter Shubman Gill’s availability for the second Test against Australia, which is scheduled to start on December 6 in Adelaide, is not certain. Gill was ruled out of the series opener due to a thumb injury sustained during an intra-squad practice match at the WACA Ground. Before the Adelaide Oval Test, India is to play a pink-ball warm-up match against the Australia Prime Minister’s XI starting Saturday in Canberra.

A Times of India report confirms that Gill will miss the practice match at the Manuka Oval, and his availability for the Adelaide Test remains doubtful as well.

Gill has been advised to rest for 10-14 days and will require match practice before being considered for selection.

The medical specialist asked Gill to rest for a few weeks following his injury. He’s not going to play in the warm-up match this weekend, and his prospects for the second Test are very low at this time. It will depend on the recovery of his injury and the way he feels after that,” the report said.

The report also mentioned the condition of pacer Mohammed Shami, who is not likely to be available to join the squad in Australia anytime soon. Shami had recently returned to action after he recovered from his knee surgery and has been under a cloud of speculation on social media over a possible trip to Australia.

There has been no discussion about sending Shami to Australia at this time. The fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the first Test in Perth have been performing well,” the report clarified.

Captain Rohit Sharma will also be back into India’s playing XI for the second Test in Adelaide as a replacement for young Devdutt Padikkal. The batting position of KL Rahul in the pink-ball warm-up match will also gain importance.

If Gill is not fit for the second Test, Rahul could replace Padikkal at number three. However, there are also murmurs that Rohit might bat at number five or six in the middle order to balance the team.

Rahul initially took Rohit’s place for this role, opening by necessity while Rohit was sitting in his Perth hotel. Regardless, he batted extremely soundly in both innings; here he scored 26, there 77; the one thing to Rahul of this series to date is consistency.
