Eknath Shinde to Join Fadnavis Government as Deputy Chief Minister, Sources Confirm

After stepping back from the race for Maharashtra’s Chief Minister position last week and remaining out of the spotlight since, Eknath Shinde will reportedly take up the role of Deputy Chief Minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government,. Fadnavis is expected to take his oath tomorrow in Mumbai, with preparations already underway. Speculations are that two deputies will accompany him and there is already a hint by Ajit Pawar that he will also be taking the oath tomorrow.

Fadnavis, who met Governor CP Radhakrishnan today and staked his claim to form the government, had during the meeting with Governor yesterday night hinted that he had made Shinde come to the administration.

“Yesterday, I requested Eknath Shinde to continue in the cabinet, and I hope he will. The Chief Minister’s post is just a technicality between us-we’ve taken decisions together and will continue to do so,” Fadnavis said, expressing gratitude to his predecessor at the top post.

Shinde responded positively when he said, “Two and a half years ago, Fadnavis recommended my name for Chief Minister, and this time, we recommend his name.” Declaring that he would not be in the way of the decision taken by BJP on the issue of the top post, Shinde returned to his village in Satara. Meanwhile, his supporters continued to be on their demand for Shinde to be appointed as Chief Minister.

Shinde was hospitalized yesterday for what his team described as a “routine check-up.” Fadnavis visited him after his return at “Varsha,” the official residence of the Chief Minister, a meeting that led to the BJP legislators’ meeting today, where Fadnavis was declared the party’s choice. The two-week uncertainty came to an end, and this decision drew flak from the Opposition.
