Tension between India and Pakistan after Kashmir Attack: Shehbaz Sharif talks about peace with Gulf countries|

Tensions between India and Pakistan have increased considerably after the deadly attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir on 22 April. 26 people were killed in this attack, most of whom were Hindu travellers. India has blamed Pakistan for this attack, but Pakistan has completely denied this accusation.

Shehbaz Sharif’s Gulf Diplomacy

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif held separate meetings with ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait on Friday. The purpose of these meetings was to reduce tensions and clarify one’s position. Sharif appealed to the Gulf countries not to further aggravate the situation by putting pressure on India. He said that Pakistan is committed to peace and stability in South Asia.

India’s Reaction and Tensions

India has taken some harsh actions against those responsible for the attack: expulsion of diplomats and citizens, border and airspace closures and the most critical – suspension of the water sharing treaty. And on this a Pakistani minister claimed that India is planning some military action. After this claim, USSSS and other diplomats called Shebhaz and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and advised them to restrain.

Pakistan’s Peace Offer

Shehbaz Sharif told UAE ambassador Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem AI-Zaabi that Pakistan has nothing to do with the attack. He also offered that Pakistan is ready to be a part of a credible, transparent and neutral international investigation. PM Sharif also gave an update on the latest situation in a meeting with Saudi ambassador Nawaf bin Saeed AI-Maliki.

Firing on the Border and No Casualties

According to the statement of the Indian Army, the firing of small arms coming from Pakistan in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Naushera and Akhnoor areas was responded to. This firing has been going on continuously for 8 days. So far no official comment has come from Pakistan.

Civil Society Protest

More than 200 people, including members of civil society and political party workers, were seen protesting against India in Muzaffarabad, which is Pakistan-administered Kashmir. They strongly condemned India’s actions.

Background: Kashmir Dispute

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence in 1947, two of which were over Kashmir. This region is divided between the two countries, but both claim it as their own.
