IRS to send unclaimed stimulus checks to 1 million taxpayers worth up to $1,400

Did you miss out on the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit?

The IRS has announced plans to send payments to 1 million taxpayers who didn’t claim the credit while filing their 2021 tax returns.

The agency reviewed its internal data and found that many eligible taxpayers failed to claim the credit despite filing their returns. Thus, those who were left out of receiving stimulus checks can expect to receive their 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit by late January if they hadn’t received a stimulus payment earlier.

Here’s what you need to know:

How much will you get?
Qualified taxpayers will receive a total of $1,400 and, in the aggregate, $2.4 billion will be provided to eligible taxpayers who actually were eligible for the credit but failed to get it.

How do I get my payment?
You do not need to do anything. The IRS will automatically issue the payment in December and most taxpayers should get their payment by the end of January. You should also receive a separate letter stating that you are receiving a payment.

Payments will be made either directly into the bank account listed on your 2023 tax return or sent as a paper check to your address on record.

What if I didn’t file my 2021 taxes?
If you do not file taxes for the year 2021, then you can still apply for the stimulus check. As long as you file your return, you can do that at any time up until April 15 of 2025, claiming the credit and even other refunds owing to you.
