Three Individuals Detained Following Flares Found Near Israeli Prime Minister’s Residence, Police Report

Israeli police reported Sunday that three people were detained after two flares were shot near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Caesarea residence. The suspects were detained overnight and will be investigated jointly with the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service.

The court has issued an order of gagging information about the identity of the suspects and the investigation for 30 days. The incident occurred in the evening of Saturday. Netanyahu was not present at the moment; the Shin Bet regarded it as a serious incident.

The flares were blamed by Israeli parliament speaker Amir Ohana on anti-government protesters, an apparent reference to continuing demonstrations that began early in 2023 protesting Netanyahu’s controversial judicial reforms, which opponents view as a threat to Israeli democracy.

Protests against Netanyahu’s government continued long after the judicial reforms were put on hold following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas. Other protests chanted about wanting a hostage deal to be reached with Gaza.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the flare incident and called for swift action to investigate and hold perpetrators accountable.
