Trump selects loyal former aide Patel for FBI director role.
Trump Names Kash Patel and Chad Chronister for Key Law Enforcement Roles
President-elect Donald Trump chose Kash Patel, a former top aide, to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an agency he has consistently bashed.
A long-time supporter of the Republican leader, Patel is a former Chief of Staff at the Defense Department under Trump’s first term. If nominated and confirmed, he would push outgoing FBI Director Christopher Wray out or into retirement, though the latter has not been mentioned in terms of dismissal by Trump.
Moreover, Trump plans to designate Chad Chronister, Hillsborough County’s sheriff in Florida, as head of the DEA. Patel and Chronister will be part of Trump’s law enforcement team, along with his Attorney General nominee, Pam Bondi.
Trump also named Charles Kushner, a real estate developer and the father of Jared Kushner, as his pick for Ambassador to France. This is the first time Trump has publicly offered a government job to a family member since his re-election campaign started.
All these appointments will be confirmed by the Senate.

Kash Patel Background and Vision
Patel, son of immigrants from India, is known by his loyalty to Trump and his skepticism towards institutions of government. Introduced by Trump as a “brilliant lawyer, investigator, and America First advocate,” Patel has called for deep reforms within the FBI–including stripping it of its sweeping authority and overhauling its leadership.
In the book Government Gangsters, Patel criticized what he labeled as “government tyranny” and recommended laying off senior FBI officials.
Patel was previously a national security aide and served as senior counsel to the House Intelligence Committee, a position where he won Trump’s trust. He has also written pro-Trump children’s books, one of which is called The Plot Against the King. In this book, Patel includes characters based on political figures, such as Hillary Clinton and former FBI Director James Comey.
Patel is still a very vocal critic of the “deep state” and the media, which he has designated as one of the country’s greatest threats.
Chad Chronister’s Background
Chad Chronister has been a law enforcement officer for over 30 years in the state of Florida and served as Hillsborough County’s sheriff since 2017. Trump commended his strong stance against drug trafficking and securing America’s southern border.
As DEA Administrator, Chronister is expected to collaborate with Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi on key initiatives such as addressing the fentanyl crisis and curbing the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S.
He was grateful, describing the nomination as “the honor of a lifetime,” and reaffirming his commitment to serving the nation.
Transition and Challenges Ahead
If confirmed, Patel and Chronister will play significant roles in shaping Trump’s law enforcement policies. Patel is set to replace Christopher Wray, whose relationship with Trump soured following the FBI’s involvement in an investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents.
The FBI, in a statement, reiterated its commitment to its mission, emphasizing its focus on protecting Americans despite leadership changes.
Through these appointments, Trump has begun forming a law enforcement lineup supporting his agenda as he readies for inauguration.
