“VAR Rules Out Bournemouth’s Late Winner Against Newcastle”
On Sunday, Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon scored an equalizer 14 minutes from the end, securing a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth and dampening the hosts’ 125th anniversary celebrations.
Bournemouth initially took the lead in the first half with a goal from Marcus Tavernier. However, Gordon leveled the score in the 76th minute, finishing off a cross from substitute Harvey Barnes to ensure Newcastle earned a share of the points.
With this draw, Newcastle now have four points from their first two games of the season, while Bournemouth had previously drawn their opening match against Nottingham Forest.
Bournemouth, aiming to cap off their anniversary with a win, thought they had secured a dramatic late victory in stoppage time when Dango Ouattara’s goal was ruled out after a VAR review. The check revealed that the ball had struck Ouattara’s arm before he scored, leading to the disallowed goal and frustration among the home fans.
Newcastle seemed more likely to grab a late winner, but Bournemouth’s goalkeeper Neto made several crucial saves to deny Alexander Isak, Joelinton, and a header from Dan Burn in the final moments.
Bournemouth’s initial lead came after Antoine Semenyo dispossessed Joelinton and maneuvered past three defenders to set up Tavernier for an easy goal. Semenyo, who had earlier hit the crossbar, was close to adding another assist in the 64th minute, but his pass was missed by a sliding Evanilson at the back post.
Evanilson, making his debut as Bournemouth’s record signing among five changes from the previous week, had his other attempts easily saved by Newcastle’s Nick Pope and was substituted after 72 minutes.
Founded in 1899, Bournemouth has enjoyed its most successful period in the last decade since their initial Premier League promotion in 2015.
