Zimbabwe, the overwhelming favorites, face Rwanda in the ninth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier Group B, held today (October 22, 2024) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Once a strong cricketing nation, Zimbabwe’s fortunes took a hit due to years of mismanagement and a deep economic crisis, sending their cricket into decline. Now, they’re battling lesser-known teams in hopes of reaching the regional final, the last hurdle before the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe missed the previous World Cup after finishing third in the African qualifiers, behind Namibia and Uganda.

Determined to avoid repeating past mistakes, Sikandar Raza and his team have approached the qualifiers with great caution. They secured commanding victories—by 76 runs (DLS method) against Seychelles and by nine wickets against Mozambique—catapulting them to the top of Group B. Hosts Kenya, who are also unbeaten, trail them in second place.

A dominant win over Rwanda today could further bolster Zimbabwe’s already impressive Net Run Rate (NRR) of +10.892, making it untouchable compared to Kenya’s +4.397. The top two teams from Group B will advance to the Africa regional final, where they will face Namibia, Uganda, and four other teams (two each from Groups A and C), for a chance to qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe and Kenya are the clear favorites to secure the top two spots in the group, but Rwanda could upset their plans. Led by the seasoned Clinton Rubagumya, Rwanda gave Kenya a scare in their second match. After putting up 100/7, Rubagumya’s team troubled Kenya’s top order on Sunday, but the total proved too small to defend in the end.

Rwanda currently sit third in the standings with two points, benefiting from a walkover against the Gambia. However, they have a negative Net Run Rate (NRR) of -1.733. A surprise victory against Zimbabwe today could shake up the standings in Group B.
